In one of the most thrilling matches of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, Afghanistan narrowly defeated Bangladesh to secure their spot in the semi-finals. This victory not only ousted Australia from the competition but also placed Afghanistan among the tournament's final four contenders, alongside India, England, and South Africa. Bangladesh, also in contention for the semi-finals, needed a decisive win. However, the outcome hinged on whether Afghanistan or Australia would advance, as Bangladesh's run chase in St Vincent featured numerous twists and turns.

A Tense Start for Afghanistan

Winning the toss, Afghanistan's captain Rashid Khan chose to bat first. The match's tension was evident from the very first ball, with opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz narrowly avoiding a run-out. This close call set the tone for the game. Bangladesh's bowlers made scoring difficult, restricting Afghanistan to just five runs in the initial two overs. Nonetheless, Gurbaz and his partner Ibrahim Zadran focused on preserving their wickets, leading Afghanistan to 27/0 by the end of the Powerplay.

Gurbaz and Zadran continued their steady partnership, achieving a 50-run stand early in the ninth over and creating history by becoming the first pair to make four 50-plus partnerships in a T20 World Cup. Despite Bangladesh's efforts to control the run rate, they conceded 13 extras in the first nine overs. Afghanistan reached 58/0 at the drinks break, but they needed to accelerate their scoring. The breakthrough came soon after the mid-innings break, with Zadran (18 off 29) getting caught. This was followed by a maiden over from Bangladesh, adding to Afghanistan's batting nerves. Although Gurbaz managed to hit two boundaries in the 14th over, tight bowling from Bangladesh created further opportunities.
Azmatullah Omarzai was dismissed cheaply, and Gurbaz (43 off 55) soon followed, leaving Afghanistan in a precarious position. Bangladesh continued to take wickets, leaving Afghanistan at 99/5 with two overs remaining.
